چکیده

Abstract We investigate sharp changes in magnetic field that can produce Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) which damage pipelines and power grids. use one‐minute cadence SuperMAG observations to find the occurrence distribution of “spikes.” Recent studies have determined recurrence statistics for extreme events charted local time spikes; however, their relation solar activity conditions wind is poorly understood. study spike during cycles 23 24, roughly 1995 2020. three hotspots occurrence: pre‐midnight region associated with substorm onsets, dawn sector often omega band activity, pre‐noon Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability (KHI) occurring at magnetopause. Magnetic perturbations are mainly North‐South substorms KHI, East‐West bands. Substorm spikes occur all phases cycle, but maximize declining phase. Omega‐band KHI confined maximum moderate driving, strong quiet high speed. show shapes these distributions do not depend on magnitude spikes, so it appears our results be extrapolated events.

Modeling the Solar Cycle Dependence of Quiet-time Ion Upwelling at High Geomagnetic Latitudes

In this letter, we summarize initial results showing how solar cycle variations of the thermosphere modify the composition and intensity of ion upflows at high geomagnetic latitudes. Using an improved version of the one-dimensional hydrodynamic polar wind model developed by Gombosi et al. (1985), we obtain H + and O + vertical flow profiles using different thermospheric states corresponding to ...

Solar cycle dependence of scaling in solar wind fluctuations

In this review we collate recent results for the statistical scaling properties of fluctuations in the solar wind with a view to synthesizing two descriptions: that of evolving MHD turbulence and that of a scaling signature of coronal origin that passively propagates with the solar wind. The scenario that emerges is that of coexistent signatures which map onto the well known “two component” pic...

QUANTIFYING THE ANISOTROPY AND SOLAR CYCLE DEPENDENCE OF “1/f” SOLAR WIND FLUCTUATIONS OBSERVED BY ACE

The solar corona expands non-uniformly into space as a supersonic plasma outflow known as the solar wind (Parker 1958). The solar wind carries signatures of coronal dynamics as well as locally generated turbulent phenomena, which span a broad range of scales. In situ spacecraft observations of fluctuations in solar wind parameters such as velocity and magnetic field (for example, Ruzmaikin et a...

Solar Cycle Variation of Real CME Latitudes

With the assumption of radial motion and uniform longitudinal distribution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), we propose a method to eliminate projection effects from the apparent observed CME latitude distribution. This method has been applied to SOHO LASCO data from 1996 January to 2006 December. As a result, we find that the real CME latitude distribution had the following characteristics: (1...
